The Lips
Lips are a visible organ at the mouth of humans. Both lips are soft, protruding, movable, and serve primarily for food intake, as a tactile sensory organ, and in articulation of speech.Lips are often viewed as a symbol for sensuality. This has many origins; above all that they are very sensitive as a tactile organ and feel pleasantly soft. It has been suggested that female lips are seen as sexually attractive because they mimic the appearance and sexual swelling of the labia of the vulva, and that the lips are therefore a secondary sex characteristic. LIP AUGMENTATION Lip augmentation creates fuller, plumper lips and reduces fine wrinkles around the mouth. Lips may be injected with collagen or with fat transferred from another site in the patient’s body. Both liquid collagen and fat are absorbed and repeat treatments are necessary to maintain results. Newer, longer-lasting options include implantable materials like AlloDerm and SoftForm.A natural or synthetic biocompatible material, or the patient’s own fat, is injected or implanted in the lips. One injection is usually sufficient to produce the desired result, which may be temporary, depending on the material used. Injections may need to be repeated periodically. Proper placement of the injected material is important. AlloDerm, a natural collagen sheet made from donated skin, is inserted through tiny incisions inside the corners of the mouth. Once the AlloDerm implant is in place, it eventually becomes integrated with the natural tissues. Gore-Tex, SoftForm and soft ePTFE are other synthetic implant options.
Procedure: Cosmetically improves the fullness of lips, by one of three techniques: injections, grafting or local flaps. This procedure is sometimes combined with facial implants, Botox®, chemical peels and facial laser resurfacing. Lip augmentation can also reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Length: 15 minutes to 2 hours. Most procedures are finished in 1 hour or less. Anesthesia: Usually locally with sedation or general. Side Effects: Allergic reactions can range from prolonged redness, swelling, itching, or hardness at the injection site. Risks: Possible complications include bleeding, uneven upper and lower lips, and an implant shifting or erupting through the skin. Graft procedures may also leave some lips feeling unnaturally stiff for 2 to 3 months. Recovery: Usually within a day. Graft recipients require 1 to 2 weeks.
